Clinical Efficacy of ECP Demonstrated in the Treatment of Non-Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy

A  study entitled Clinical efficacy of external counterpulsation in the treatment of non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy, authored by Xi Zhang and Qiuling Zhu was recently published in the Chinese Journal of Ocular Fundus Diseases. This randomized, controlled study demonstrated the significant differences in the vision effective ratio and the fundus effective ratio between the ECP treated group and the conventional therapy group. Additionally, the progression to Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (PDR) incidence rate between the ECP group and the conventional therapy group was significant (1.19% versus 7.32%, respectively). The authors concluded that with an improvement in peak systolic velocity (PSV), diastolic velocity (EDV) and a reduction in the resistance index (RI) of the opthalmic artery (OA) and the central retinal artery (CRA), ECP can improves vision and fundus state as well as reduce the incidence of PDR.
